Effects of Information Technology Employee productivity in the hospitality sector

Abstract

Today, business settings have changed along with the improvement of knowledge-based economy and information communication Technology (ICT) has become the vital component of organizational productivity. Information communication technology is one of the strategic factors towards the improvement of business and human resource productivity. This paper investigates the effect of Information Communication Technology dimensions on work force productivity of the hospitality industry as a sub sector of Tourism. The statistical population of the study was all managers and staff members working in different areas related to Information communication technology of five selected hospitality establishments in Kisumu city. A study sample of 155 respondents’ supporting and management staff of the five selected establishments was selected through stratified sampling. The data for the study was collected from both primary and secondary sources while the research instruments were questionnaires and data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS).The purpose of this study were to identify the effects of Information Technology in the hospitality industry, the effectiveness of using I.T. systems in the industry, challenges faced when using I.T. equipment in the industry and whether the use of I.T. systems increase productivity. The findings of the study indicated that the dimensions of Information Communication Technology (Information technology, Management Information System, Internet, Office automation and Internet) affect human resource productivity. Also the demographic variables of education level and the type of available jobs had effects on the Internet dimension of human resource productivity in the hospitality establishments. Study finding can be vital in directing policy actions in Kenya’s tourism and hospitality sector to address the effects of I.T. in the hospitality industry
